Minka
Minka
Minka is a non-profit, non-government organisation formed in 1978 to promote an integrated development program of handicrafts, agriculture and livestock education, health and community infrastructure in Peru. It aims to improve the standard of living of the producers, strengthen their basic organisation and create and develop an awareness of their position in society.
Minka provides training; it also helps market handcrafts for about 10,000 producers of which 80% are women, offering a significantly better alternative to middlemen whose speculative practices are based on a low rate of payment to artisans.
Oxfam Australia Trading has been supporting Minka for the past decade by importing and selling products that range from Shipibo pots from Iquitos, painted ceramics from Cuzco, terracotta-whistling people from Ayacucho, and pan flutes from Puno.
