PREDA

PREDA – Philippines

PREDA Fair Trading is one of a range of projects run by the PREDA (People’s Recovery, Empowerment and Development Assistance) Foundation. The non-profit organisation works on a national and international level to promote human rights, campaign against child labour and sexual exploitation of children, raise awareness of HIV/AIDS, and promote development projects throughout the Philippines.

PREDA Fair Trading currently supports 26 rural and urban-based producer groups and exports their high-quality products. These groups produce various handicrafts, as well as consumables such as dried fruit, coffee and jams. The organisation works with thousands of small farmers and co-operatives in expanding fruit production and dried fruit processing. PREDA pays farmers a fair price and gives them access to expanding markets, eliminating the price fixing cartels that once dominated the industry.

In addition to providing access to export markets, PREDA ensures the groups meet fair trade criteria, provides them with quality raw materials, gives artisans interest free production and development loans, and trains them in product design and business management. The producer groups are paid immediately upon delivery. The organisation also funds village infrastructure projects, such as clean water systems.
