PODIE
PODIE is the People's Organisation for Development, Import and Export. Sri Lanka has a long history of spice cultivation. Started in 1974 in Negobo, north of Colombo, Sri Lanka they are a non-profit and self-sustainable small organisation working with 16 women's producer groups organized into cooperatives. The word Podie means small in Sinhalese. Podie's aim is to offer new work opportunities to young women from poor families and to build a strong fair trade system in Sri Lanka. They make contact with local small-scale spice producers aiming to cut out the exploitation of middlemen. Podie is working in the tsunami affected areas of Sri Lanka.
