Not only does this card look like it’s crawling with bees, which should freak out the person who receives it, but it also pays for a beehive in Malawi. This hive will help local women, and those living with HIV and AIDS, to generate much needed income.
In Malawi, bee-keeping gives poor people the opportunity to generate an income, as they can sell their honey at market. Oxfam Australia supports bee-keeping projects in Malawi with a particular focus on helping women and those living with HIV and AIDS. The sweetest part about bee-keeping is that, unlike crops, it doesn’t require much land to thrive.
“The money realised from the sale of the honey harvested from this project will be shared amongst households participating in the project. This will raise their living standards as they will be able to purchase fertiliser and boost their crop harvests next season.” Chibalo Village Leader, Malawi.
