In South Africa over 1.5 million children are orphaned as a result of HIV alone. This gift helps support Keep the Dream 196, a community-based child protection organisation that uses mentoring programs to provide better care for orphans and vulnerable children. Accessing existing youth networks, Keep the Dream 196 is helping orphans and other vulnerable children identify and draw on their strengths to overcome challenges and build personal resilience. Their mentors guide them to make better decisions so that they can build a brighter future, not just for themselves, but for others in their community. “We teach children about their rights and responsibilities. We don’t only teach them about their rights but also about being independent as well. At school they teach them about their rights but not about being responsible ... the kids who do [our program] are different to those who don’t.
