Catch of the day
Catch of the day
This simple gift will provide one fishing net for fisherfolk in India to help them earn a living. The income earned from selling fish reduces the need for tribal men to migrate in search of work and their dependency on money lenders. Best of all the net can be used for several years to come.
How does this gift help?
The Katkari tribal community is one of several Indigenous groups inhabiting the western mountains of Maharashtra in India’s north-west. The Katkari are an Indigenous tribe who have traditionally been dependent on natural resources, making their living through freshwater fishing. The income earned from selling fish has reduced the need for tribal men to migrate in search of work and reduced their dependency on money lenders. The net can be used for several years and can be repaired by the fishermen themselves without too much investment. “On average I am selling three kilograms of fish each day in the market, where previously I had no job, no income. I am spending some of that money on my family’s food, and the rest I am saving for the education and future of my two children." Anita Ankush, Pithan village, Maharashtra, India
