Are you brave enough to give someone you love this card? Of course you are, because it’s good fun and it’s for a great cause. This card will help pay for women in Africa to learn skills that will help them and their families escape from poverty. You will even find some of their handy work in the Oxfam shop. But buy this card first.
In Ingwavuma, South Africa, embroidery lessons are helping the local women to overcome poverty. Hot Girls Fancy Stitch runs a skills development project that teaches embroidery stitching, framing, and computer literacy. The project generates income that improves the livelihoods of the women involved and their families. The women, known affectionately as the “Hot Girls”, create exquisite handiworks that give an intimate portrayal of their lives. The overall aim is to assist in the empowerment and development of people who are poverty-stricken and affected by HIV and AIDS.
“[My] situation was very bad. Things started to get better when I joined Fancy Stitch … I have built my house and support my family. I’d like to thank Fancy Stitch for contributing to change in my life.” Jabu, Fancy Stitch member forced to leave school as a pregnant teenager.
