Who ever thought leather could be toxic? The difference between commercially tanned leather and Eco leather starts right from the beginning when the raw hide comes to the tannery for tanning. Usually, the raw hide is preserved for tanning with toxic chrome based chemicals which turn the hides blue in colour, hence it is known as ‘wet blue stage’. Eco leather tanning process does not use any heavy metals like Chrome VI, formaldehyde, pentachlorophenol – toxic pollutants of our water ways and ground water. Instead common salt is employed to bring the solution to a ‘wet white stage’. This means that the tanning process needs to be completed in a shorter time to avoid spoilage.
The eco leather is tanned in large drums which are rotated over 24 hours and what comes out after that time is the final product of a softly tanned hide. Whereas commercial leather is further exposed to chemicals to make it smooth and soft after being removed from the toxic solutions in the drums. Dyes used in the final finish are Azo free.
Eco leather is harmless to human bodies and the environment. The solutions are bio-degradable. A prerequisite in producing Eco leather is the use of A grade hides to start with, with minimal marks, blemishes and damages. The time intensive production process, the quality of the raw material, the Azo free dyes all make this exceptionally leather demands a higher price – but the benefit that this leather processing will have on the environment is worth every penny.
