Aussie Rules Footy
Everyone loves to get a ball, especially one like this that has the power to bring communities together, get young men back to school and lower the mortality rate. When you buy this card, your donation will go towards the Fitzroy Stars Men’s Education Program that uses footy as a way of helping young Indigenous Australians.
The mortality rate of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders is three times the rate of non-Indigenous Australians, with men also less likely to visit a doctor. Oxfam Australia supports the Fitzroy Stars Football Club, which not only runs a fun activity, but also provides a safe, culturally appropriate environment to educate Aboriginal men. The Fitzroy Stars Men’s Program educates Aboriginal people on the importance of improving behaviour and lifestyles, which includes having health checks to detect risks associated with chronic illness. The program also focuses on providing counselling and support to ensure emotional wellbeing.
“It’s brought the community back together. For health, for socialising, and for family to get together. A lot of people have been out of the community. The Fitzroy Stars gives them a way to get back in.” Pat Austin, Fitzroy Stars Volunteer, Victoria.
